My mother arrived at my wedding wearing a simple secondhand dress, and in a moment of thoughtless frustration, I told her she was “the family embarrassment.” She smiled through tears, saying nothing. I never imagined those would be some of the last words I spoke to her. She passed away while I was on my honeymoon, and after the funeral, I found that same dress folded neatly on her bed.
