“You can’t do that.”

Martin said, “Sit down.”

Jason didn’t.

So I spoke.

“Watch me.”

He sat.

My mother finally found her voice.

“You would dismantle your childhood home.”

I looked at her.

“You dismantled it years ago. I’m just putting it in writing.”

She stared at me with flat hatred then. Pure. Clean. No frosting on it.
