I stood up.

Walked around the table.

And hugged her.

She kept apologizing.

I held her tighter.

“Daniel spent one summer making those columns white,” I told her.

My voice cracked.

“But I’ll spend the rest of my life being grateful you painted them black.”

Because Daniel’s white columns were something my husband had built.
