“Your sister is in the hospital,” my mother said. “Don’t ask questions. Just come.”

By the time I reached St. Vincent Medical Center in Columbus, my younger sister Megan was sitting behind a curtain in the emergency department with her left wrist wrapped in a temporary splint.
