Emma pushed her away.

“Don’t touch me!”

She ran out of the house. Claire started after her, but I stopped her.

“Give her some time.”

Claire collapsed against my chest, sobbing, and I held her while the front door slammed behind Emma.

Emma didn’t leave with us that day.
