“Happy birthday to me,” my husband whispered before walking out the front door, leaving me bleeding and collapsing on the nursery floor right next to our premature baby. He didn’t care that I was dying; he had a VIP reservation at a five-star resort. Three days later, after walking out of the hospital ICU, he waltzed back home expecting a warm meal. Instead, he found an empty crib, a closed bank account, and a final divorce notice waiting for him.

dark hours of the night, the ghost of that memory tries to surface. I can still feel the cold carpet beneath my cheek. I can still hear the terrible silence of that house.

But then, I walk down the hall to Leo’s room. I listen to the steady, reassuring rhythm of his breathing. I brush the soft curls from his forehead, and the shadows retreat.
