He thought he was stopping for a stray dog in the snow-until he saw what she was hiding beneath her body

to the evidence bag in his hand, then to Scout. Her voice gentled when she spoke again. “That the dog?”

Cal gave one nod.

Jenna did not lift her camera right away. That made Cal dislike her a little less. She watched Scout trembling beside him and wrote nothing for several seconds.

“She knows this place,” Jenna said.

Scout pulled back another inch.
