I came home for a forgotten folder and froze when I saw my mother forcing my eight-month-pregnant wife to eat table scraps on the floor in front of six laughing guests. “She’s carrying a peasant’s child, she belongs with the dogs,” my mother sneered. “Don’t ever touch her again,” I said as I quietly dialed 911. Three hours later, the ER doctor handed me an ultrasound report that made my blood run cold.

lost your mind?!” my mother shrieked, wiping a splash of wine from her cheek, her face contorted in demonic fury. “I am your mother!”

“And this is my wife,” I roared, my voice shaking the crystal chandelier above us. “And the child she is carrying is my son! Neither of those facts meant a damn thing to you!”
