I came home for a forgotten folder and froze when I saw my mother forcing my eight-month-pregnant wife to eat table scraps on the floor in front of six laughing guests. “She’s carrying a peasant’s child, she belongs with the dogs,” my mother sneered. “Don’t ever touch her again,” I said as I quietly dialed 911. Three hours later, the ER doctor handed me an ultrasound report that made my blood run cold.

covering her knees and shins looked like she had been beaten with a pipe.

“She didn’t get those from a clumsy fall,” the doctor said grimly.
