I came home for a forgotten folder and froze when I saw my mother forcing my eight-month-pregnant wife to eat table scraps on the floor in front of six laughing guests. “She’s carrying a peasant’s child, she belongs with the dogs,” my mother sneered. “Don’t ever touch her again,” I said as I quietly dialed 911. Three hours later, the ER doctor handed me an ultrasound report that made my blood run cold.
