I finally got to meet my son’s newborn—then a nurse leaned in and whispered, “That’s not the baby he left with.”

almost smiled. “Yeah. My son.”

I looked toward the bassinet by the window.

The baby inside was smaller than the one I had held before. Lighter. Finer hair. A different nose. If I had been calmer that first day, maybe I would have noticed. Maybe not. Newborns all blur together when your heart gets there first.

I walked over on shaking legs.
