muffled arguing, somebody saying “She’s on?” and a door slamming.

Diane came on sharp as broken glass. “Mom, this is insane.”

“No, Diane. Telling your children they’d be dumped at my house without speaking to me first, that’s insane.”

“I wasn’t dumping them.”

“You packed suitcases.”

“It was just a couple days.”

“At Christmas.”
