Outside, the night air hit cold and wet. It had rained while we were inside. The limo idled under the porte cochere, useless now. Beyond it, my mother’s old silver Buick sat crooked near the curb because valet had tried to tuck it away and she’d insisted on keeping her keys.
“Take my car,” she said.
“In this dress?”
“You’ve driven in worse clothes.”
