I sat in my motel room on the edge of the bed, still wearing the same scrub pants I’d traveled in two days before.

“Brittany, they have your text message.”

Silence.

Then, “I was joking.”

“You don’t joke in wire transfers.”

She started crying then, or making the noises. Hard to tell with her. “You don’t get it. I owed people.”
