I Took My Mom to Prom to Make Up for What She Missed — My Stepsister Ruined the Night

When I asked my mom to be my prom date, I thought it would just be a small way to thank her for everything she had done for me. I never expected it to become the most unforgettable night of our lives—or for my stepsister to try to ruin it.

My mom, Emma, became a parent when she was only 17. The boy who got her pregnant disappeared, leaving her to raise me on her own. She gave up college, missed out on graduation celebrations, and never got to attend her own prom. Instead, she worked long hours to build a life for us. Growing up, she would sometimes joke about her “almost-prom,” but I could always hear the sadness hidden behind her smile.

When my prom came around, I knew exactly who I wanted to take. At first, my mom thought I was kidding. Then she started crying and asked if I was sure I wouldn’t be embarrassed. I told her the truth: she had sacrificed everything for me, and this was the least I could do. My stepdad Mike thought it was a wonderful idea, but my stepsister Brianna mocked it constantly. She called it embarrassing and said my mom would make a fool of herself.
