I was cleaning the pool this morning when I suddenly noticed this.

murky water.

Without knowing its purpose, the tube can easily be mistaken for a tail, worm or stinger.

Once its function is understood, however, the creature becomes much less mysterious.

It is not carrying some hidden weapon.

It is simply breathing.

The unsettling appearance comes from seeing an adaptation that most people rarely encounter up close.
