Then the stranger asked:

“And your son?”

And Margaret replied calmly:

“He leaves at six-thirty.”

When the recording ended, Daniel looked first at his mother, then at me.

“You followed her?” he asked.

“No,” I said. “Emily saw her at the mall.”

That hit harder than anything else.
