My 4-year-old son proudly brought a piece of homemade cake to my mother-in-law in front of 20 relatives, and she kicked it across the patio, sneering, “Don’t ever call me grandma, you’re not even real family.” I simply hugged my crying little boy, wiped his tears, and looked straight at my husband, saying, “You saw that? Remember this moment.” I never imagined that later that same afternoon, we would rush to the hospital after my son collapsed, and the doctors would uncover something even worse hidden inside the cake.
