My 4-year-old son proudly brought a piece of homemade cake to my mother-in-law in front of 20 relatives, and she kicked it across the patio, sneering, “Don’t ever call me grandma, you’re not even real family.” I simply hugged my crying little boy, wiped his tears, and looked straight at my husband, saying, “You saw that? Remember this moment.” I never imagined that later that same afternoon, we would rush to the hospital after my son collapsed, and the doctors would uncover something even worse hidden inside the cake.

Luke took the spoon. He hesitated for a fraction of a second, then scooped up a warm, syrupy bite and placed it in his mouth.

I held my breath.

A slow, brilliant, radiant smile stretched across his face, lighting up the entire room.
