Even grocery lists. Even birthday cards. The front read EMILY in thick blue ink from the pen he keeps clipped inside his shirt pocket.

I opened it.

Inside was a hotel notepad sheet, folded twice.

Three lines.

I KNOW WHO PAID FOR MY SURGERY.
I KNEW BEFORE TODAY.
I’M SORRY I LET HIM TAKE IT.
