Every time I asked, there was paperwork.
Or a story.
Or a sigh that made me sound ungrateful.
By the time I joined the military, I had already learned two useful things. First: if a thing matters, get it in writing. Second: if your family says “don’t make this ugly,” somebody’s already done the ugly part and they need you quiet so it keeps working.
