I picked up my bag.
Kids were chasing each other again. Somebody had turned on music too quietly. Life had resumed in that patchwork family way, stitched over damage and pretending maybe the seam wouldn’t show.
Mom hugged me at the gate. Hard.
“Drive safe,” she said into my shoulder.
“I will.”
“And send the photos.”
“I said I would.”
