There was a lint roller on a chair beside us. Somebody had left one there. White plastic. Cheap thing.

I looked at it instead of him.

“You didn’t want to.”

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Then he nodded once, like I’d assigned him a task he hated, and walked away.
