I stared at him.

“You had your career.”

He nodded.

“Your confidence. Your promotions. Your friendships.”

His voice dropped.

“And every year I felt smaller.”

I looked away.

Not because I agreed.

Because I finally understood.

Insecurity had been driving much of his behavior.

Not money.
