My Mother-In-Law Said Six Words He Wasn’t Ready to Hear

sounded scraped raw. “Did you know?”

“About the money, yes.”

A long silence.

“And about the twins?”

I looked down at the report on my desk. Her envelope still sat beside it, unmarked except for my address in tight blue ink.

“Not until last night.”

She made a small sound. Shame, maybe. Or relief. Hard to tell.
