The man nodded toward the mare without truly looking at her. “She’s done.”

Wade said nothing.

“I’m serious,” the man went on. “That leg’s rotten with trouble. She’ll be lucky if she makes the drive north. Plant might turn her away if she goes down in the trailer.”

The mare’s ear twitched at the sound of his voice. She did not lift her head.
