Behind him, the first officer shifted, glanced at his watch, and said, “Captain, we’re running late.”

Warren stood. “Two minutes.”

Then he looked at me again, and said the one thing I hadn’t expected.

“You didn’t save me in-country.”

I frowned. “What?”

“You saved me in Kentucky.”
