The woman leaned toward me first. Mid-fifties, red scarf, too much perfume.

“I just want to say,” she said, “what happened was appalling.”

I gave her a polite nod.

Her husband jumped in. “People have no class.”

Five minutes earlier he hadn’t had any volume.
