They waited.

Dana helped bring my wheelchair up from below, but I looked at it, then at my crutches, and shook my head.

“No. Not today.”

It was a dumb choice for my leg and a good one for my pride.

So I stood. Got my balance. Took the first step into the aisle.

Then another.

People moved back to make room.

No pity in it this time.

Just room.
