Mrs. Hanley met us in the lobby.

She crouched slowly—carefully, like she had her own aches—and held out a hand.

Barnaby sniffed her fingers, then leaned into her palm like a tired blessing.

His tail wagged once.

Not frantic.

Not jumping.

Just… there.

Mrs. Hanley’s eyes flicked up to me.

“Let’s take a walk,” she said.

We did.
