only place I sang was Summit Hill’s auditorium.

At 5:00 in the morning.

When no one could hear.

My day started at 4:20.

I would pull on my work uniform, slip out before Mom woke, and walk six blocks to the school.

The security guard knew me.

So did the kitchen staff.

So did the janitors.

The students did not.
