The puppy lifted her head. Her nose worked once, twice, and then her entire body came alive. She scrambled to her feet, slipped on the towel, and struck the carrier door with both front paws.

Lucy dropped to her knees.

She did not open the carrier immediately. Instead, she placed two fingers against the plastic side.
