“I got scared,” he said. “The company was slipping. People were counting on me. I thought I could fix it before anyone noticed.”

“Before I noticed.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

My throat hurt.

“Why didn’t you ask me?”

“Because you would’ve said no.”

“Yes.”

“And I couldn’t hear no.”

At least that was honest.
